MINGA

Minga is an inca tradition of the community getting together to work on some sort of project to better the community. So far we have done two.

The first was in intag were we helped move smooth river stones around to build a bridge over a little river stream. It wasn’t the most productive or efficient work I have ever done but it was cool to work side by side with the locals helping with something they had come up with and was important to them.

The second was during the first week of classes in quito. When we are not traveling for the week we have a day-long excursion out of the city Wednesday or thurday. This time we went to a farm an hour or two away and planted trees for reforestacion. In a couple hours we planted 95 trees, which almost off-set our carbon footprint for the flight down here!! which is pretty cool. We also surveyed the trees planted in past years to monitor their growth and stuff. It is super nice to get out of the city, although when we all hang out like that we speak a lot of english and this bothers me… but what are you gonna do. No sé
